Anza-Borrego Desert State Park — This 600,000-acre park, the largest in the United States, enjoys virtually the same climate as the Coachella Valley. The park surrounds the quiet community of Borrego Springs, itself becoming a haven for celebrities and artists. Visitors can explore by foot, vehicle or bicycle. Guided Jeep tours also available. Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert — When they say “hands-on museum,” they mean it. The kids can touch and have so much fun while learning, creating, exploring and experimenting in a safe, caring setting. Indian Canyons — A Palm Springs treasure shared with the world. Andreas, Murray and Palm canyons feature a trading post, picnic grounds, hiking and horse trails. Year-round 8 a.m.-6 p.m. S. Palm Canyon Dr., five miles from center of Palm Springs. Tahquitz Canyon with its spectacular waterfalls is now open after being closed to the public for more than 30 years. Joshua Tree National Park — Mojave and Colorado deserts join to form this wondrous place with awesome rock formations, many varieties of flora, wildlife sancturary, campgrounds, horse and hiking trails. Visit the Official Visitor Centers for Park information, ranger-conducted activities and bookstores at three locations: Oasis of Mara Headquarters, National Park Dr., Twentynine Palms; Black Rock Canyon, take Joshua Lane in Yucca Valley; and Cottonwood, take Mecca Rd. Exit off I-10 East. From Palm Springs, take Route 62 through Morongo and Yucca Valleys. $10 per car (7 days). 367-5500

Knott’s Soak City — Deluxe, family-oriented water playground in a private beach club atmosphere. Thirteen waterslides including the new and exciting Shark Attack, a three-person Tube Ride in a speedy, twisting open flume, wavepool for body- and board-surfing, the relaxing Lazy River ride. The Living Desert — Our wildest attraction, featuring rare and endangered desert animals and African wildlife. The African Village WaTuTu, is home to camels, cheetahs, zebras and more, plus the Petting Kraal that kids love. Explore hiking trails, picnic areas, the “Wildlife Wonders” live animal shows daily in the Tennity Amphitheater and native plants in the Wortz Demonstration Garden. Palm Springs Aerial Tramway — One of the world’s most spectacular aerial rides with two state-of-the-art rotating tramcars. Mountain Station at 8,5l6 feet features a restaurant, cocktail lounge, gift shop and movie theater. Mt. San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness offers 54 miles of hiking trails and, when the snow falls, cross-country skiing and snow-tubing with rentals available. This area has been designated a National Monument. Tickets for the popular Ride ’n’ Dine, served after 4 p.m., are available after 2:30 p.m. Ample parking. Palm Springs Air Museum — A tribute to the flying machines and the heroes who flew them in World War II, featuring propeller-driven aircraft in flying condition showcased in air-conditioned hangars. Also, the Buddy Rogers Theatre of the Air, an aircraft restoration center, photographs, memorabilia. Plus meeting space, educational and entertainment events. Palm Springs Desert Museum — A cultural showplace in its 64th year as a prestigious art and natural science facility, featuring galleries with exceptional permanent collections and top changing exhibitions. Lovely sculpture gardens invite relaxing. The Annenberg Theater offers a full season of performing arts and lectures. Classes and field trips are part of a busy Education Department.
